Celje Castle

Located on a hill overlooking the city, this site consists of the ruins of a medieval fortress that served as the seat of the Counts of Celje. Visitors go here to explore the remains of what was once the largest fortress in Slovenia and to view the surrounding landscape and the Savinja River from the elevation.

The castle is situated just outside the city centre. It is accessible via a short drive or a walk uphill from the central district, typically taking about 15 to 20 minutes on foot depending on the starting point.

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the ruins, explore the grounds, and observe the views of the valley.

When to Visit

The site is open to the air, making it most accessible during the spring, summer, and autumn. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon avoids the midday heat. While it is a primary site in the city, it generally does not experience extreme overcrowding, though weekends are busier than weekdays.
