Overview

The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, West Asia & North Africa is a research institution and museum affiliated with the University of Chicago. Located on campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood, it displays archaeological artifacts excavated across Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Anatolia, and the Levant.

Getting There

From downtown Chicago (the Loop), take the Metra Electric Line train from Millennium Station to the 59th Street (University of Chicago) station. The train ride takes about 20 minutes, followed by a short walk west. Alternatively, CTA express buses connect downtown to Hyde Park in roughly 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend between 1.5 and 2 hours to view the permanent collection and galleries at an unhurried pace.

When to Go

The museum does not typically experience the large crowds seen at major downtown attractions. Weekdays, especially during morning and early afternoon hours, tend to be the quietest. Occasional university student visits occur during the academic term.
