Monadnock Building

Overview

The Monadnock Building is a 16-story high-rise built in 1891 in Chicago's Loop. Recognized as one of the city's oldest surviving high-rises, it showcases early skyscraper masonry. Travellers visit to study its classic brick facade and walk through the public ground-floor corridor.

Getting There

Located in the city centre, the site is a 5- to 10-minute walk from central Loop points. Public transit users can take the 'L' train to the Jackson or Harold Washington Library stations, both roughly two blocks away.

Time to Allow

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes. This is sufficient to view the exterior architecture and walk through the ground-floor arcade.

When to Visit

Daylight hours on weekdays are best for viewing architectural details and accessing the interior corridor. As an active office building, it sees worker traffic around commute and lunch hours, but tourist crowding is minimal. Spring through autumn offers the most comfortable weather for exterior viewing.
