What It Is

The Linwood Islamic Centre is a Muslim place of worship in Christchurch that opened in 2018 and was a site of the 2019 mosque shootings. The original building was demolished in 2023, with a new mosque planned on the grounds. Travellers visit to pay respects, reflect, and learn about the city's recent history and community recovery.

Getting There

Located in the suburb of Linwood, the site is about 2.5 kilometres east of the city centre. Driving or taking a taxi takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes. Local buses reach the area in about 15 minutes, and walking from downtown takes approximately 30 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan for 15 to 30 minutes. As the site undergoes redevelopment, visits are typically brief and suited for quiet reflection.

When to Go

Visit during daylight hours. The area does not get crowded with tourists, but it is best to avoid times around Friday prayer services. Maintain quiet respect and avoid any active rebuilding zones.
