Styx River

The Styx River is a natural waterway located on the northern edge of Christchurch. It flows through the Brooklands Lagoon before merging with the Waimakariri River. Travelers visit this area for quiet waterside scenery and nature walks within a short distance of the urban center.

Getting There

The river is located north of the city centre. Access is primarily via car or taxi. Depending on traffic, the drive from central Christchurch typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Depending on whether you are walking the banks or observing the lagoon, allow 1 to 3 hours to explore the immediate area.

When to Visit

The site is best visited during daylight hours. Like most natural areas in the region, it is accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer mild temperatures for walking. It generally does not experience the high crowds found in the city's main tourist hubs.

Nearby Attractions

Because this location is on the outskirts, you can combine a visit here with several central landmarks on your way back into the city:

  • Al Noor Mosque (6.5km)
  • Hagley Park (6.5km)
  • Christchurch Botanic Gardens (6.6km)
  • Christ's College Chapel (6.9km)
