St. Mariä Himmelfahrt

Overview

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a Catholic church situated on Marzellenstrasse in Cologne. Once the second-largest church in the city after Cologne Cathedral, it represents one of the few remaining examples of Baroque architecture in Cologne. Visitors primarily go to examine its distinct Baroque interior and structural design.

Getting There

The church is located just north of Cologne Central Station and the main cathedral area. From the city centre, it takes approximately 2 to 4 minutes on foot walking along Marzellenstrasse.

Time to Allow

Allow around 20 to 30 minutes to view the nave, altars, and interior decor.

When to Go

Visit during daylight hours for the best interior lighting. The building is generally quiet and does not draw the heavy tourist crowds seen at nearby landmarks. Avoid visiting during religious services if you intend to walk around and take in the architecture.
