Overview and History

The 8 November Bridge is a historical landmark site situated at the northern entrance to the Kaloum peninsula. Constructed in the 1960s, the original bridge served as a critical bottleneck linking central Conakry with the mainland outskirts. Due to its geography, it became a focal point during military coups and political upheavals throughout Guinea's post-independence era. Although the bridge was later demolished and now survives only as a place in history, travellers interested in modern political history visit the location to see the strategic choke point that shaped the capital's past.

Getting There

The site is located at the main entry corridor to central Kaloum. From the city centre, reaching the area by taxi or private vehicle typically takes 10 to 15 minutes, though travel times can increase during periods of heavy road congestion.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend approximately 10 to 15 minutes at the site. Because the physical bridge no longer stands, a short stop is sufficient to view the junction and take in its historical context.

When to Visit

Visit during daylight hours for safety and visibility. Traffic along this primary route is heavily congested during morning and evening commute hours, making midday the best time to travel. The dry season from November to April is preferable for city exploration, avoiding the heavy downpours of the rainy season.

Nearby Attractions

A stop here can be easily combined with several nearby points of interest:

  • Monument du 22 Novembre 1970 (0.5 km)
  • Conakry Botanical Garden (0.6 km)
  • Grand Mosque of Conakry (1 km)
  • Marché Madina (3 km)
