Tarqui River

The Tarqui River is a waterway that flows along the northern edge of downtown Cuenca. Originating near Paute, it serves as a natural corridor through the city. Travelers visit this area primarily for the riverside walkways, which provide a space for walking and observing the local landscape away from the main traffic of the city center.

Getting There

The river runs directly adjacent to the northern side of the city center. Depending on your starting point in downtown Cuenca, it is accessible via a short walk of 5 to 15 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Depending on how much of the riverside path you wish to explore, allow between 1 and 2 hours for a leisurely walk.

When to Visit

The riverside paths are accessible throughout the day. Morning and late afternoon are generally preferred to avoid the midday sun. Like most central public spaces in Cuenca, these paths can become more crowded during weekends and local holidays.

  • Museo Pumapungo: 1.3km
  • Iglesia de Todos Santos: 1.5km
