Anahuarque

Anahuarque is a mountain located in the Andes southeast of Cusco, reaching an elevation of 4,050 meters above sea level. Travelers visit this site for trekking and to observe the high-altitude landscapes characteristic of the Peruvian highlands.

Getting There

The mountain is situated outside the main city center of Cusco. Access is typically via taxi or hired transport from the city. Depending on traffic and the specific trailhead used, the journey generally takes between 30 to 60 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Visitors should allow several hours to account for the ascent and descent. Because of the high altitude, the pace of trekking is slower than at sea level, and additional time is required for acclimatization and rest during the hike.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the dry season, typically from May to October, to avoid heavy rains that can make trails slippery. It is advisable to start the trek early in the morning to avoid afternoon weather changes common in the Andes. This location is less crowded than the primary tourist sites in the city center.

Nearby Attractions

The area offers several other high-altitude points of interest that can be combined into a regional itinerary:

  • Muyu Urqu: 3.9km
  • Araway Qhata: 4.1km
  • Wanakawri (Cusco): 5.7km
  • Convent of Santo Domingo: 6.7km
