Gorée Island

Located off the coast of Dakar, this island served as a major hub for the transatlantic slave trade. Travelers visit to engage with this history, specifically at the House of Slaves and the island's historical museum, which document the era of enslavement.

Getting There

Access to the island is by ferry from the Dakar city center. The boat trip typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on sea conditions.

Duration of Visit

A half-day to a full day is generally sufficient to visit the primary historical sites and walk through the village.

When to Visit

The island can become crowded during peak tourist seasons and on weekends. Arriving with the first ferry of the morning is a practical way to avoid the largest crowds.

Nearby Attractions

Because the island is small and pedestrian-friendly, several sites are within walking distance of each other. You can combine your visit with:

  • Musée de la Mer (0.2km)
  • Historical Museum of Senegal (0.4km)

If you have further time in Dakar after returning to the mainland, other sites include the Museum of Black Civilizations (4.1km) and Cap Manuel (4.2km).
