Magdalen Islands

Overview

The Magdalen Islands form an uninhabited archipelago off Dakar's western coast. Designated as one of the smallest national parks in the world, the area features steep cliffs, coastal vegetation, and diverse bird and fish species. Visitors go primarily for walking trails, birdwatching, and coastal scenery.

Getting There

From central Dakar, take a taxi to the departure point on the western corniche, then board a traditional wooden boat to the main island. The water crossing takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes, making total travel time around 30 to 45 minutes.

Time to Spend

Plan for 2 to 3 hours on the island itself. This gives adequate time to walk the marked paths, see the rock formations, and observe wildlife.

When to Visit

Mornings are ideal because sea conditions are typically calmer and midday heat is avoided. Rough water or strong winds can lead to canceled boat crossings. Because daily visitor quotas are enforced, the area rarely feels crowded.

Nearby Attractions

After returning to the mainland, you can visit several central sights located nearby:

  • Daniel Sorano National Theatre (3.7km)
  • IFAN Museum of African Arts (3.7km)
  • Our Lady of Victories Cathedral, Dakar (3.8km)
  • Dakar Grand Mosque (4.1km)
