Getting Around Darkhan

Darkhan consists of two separate districts: Old Darkhan, centered on the railway station, and New Darkhan, the commercial core. Travel centers on the road between them.

• Buses and minibuses: Shuttle along the avenue connecting Old and New Darkhan. They win for budget travel along this main route.
• Informal taxis: Hailed by raising a hand curbside; regular drivers act as unmarked cabs. They win for speed, night trips, and reaching side streets.
• Walking: Easy within central New Darkhan. Walking between Old and New Darkhan is impractical due to distance and extreme weather.

Fares and Ticketing

Darkhan has no transit passes or smart cards. Fares require cash in small Mongolian tugrik banknotes; drivers cannot break large bills. Buses charge a flat fare per ride, while informal taxis charge per kilometer or a negotiated flat rate.

Bulgan Airport (UGA) to Darkhan

Bulgan Airport handles regional flights to the west. Reaching Darkhan requires overland travel across provincial borders.

• Private car hire: Lowest effort and fastest. Sits in the highest cost band with direct point-to-point service.
• Shared regional taxi: Boarded from Bulgan town transport stands. Moderate effort and cost band, but departures wait for seats to fill.

Practical Transit Notes

• Peak hours and late service: Traffic bunches along the central corridor during morning and evening rush. Buses stop by mid-evening, after which street taxis are the only option.
• Luggage: Minibuses have narrow aisles and no storage. Take a taxi if carrying suitcases.
