Seasonal Weather Patterns
David operates on a tropical savanna climate, meaning the year is divided into two primary seasons: the dry season (verano) and the rainy season (invierno).
Dry Season (December to April)
This is the most popular window for visitors. The weather is consistently sunny and hot, with minimal rainfall. Daylight is stable, and the roads leading from David to the highlands of Boquete are generally in better condition. Expect higher crowds and limited availability of transport and rentals during the peak months of January and February.
Rainy Season (May to November)
Rainfall increases significantly, often arriving as heavy afternoon or evening thunderstorms. While the city remains humid and hot, the surrounding landscapes become lush and green. Crowds are thinner, and the atmosphere is quieter, though heavy rains can occasionally cause delays in local road travel.
Choosing Your Travel Window
- For Nature and Hiking: Visit between December and March. This ensures dry trails for exploring the nearby Chiriquí highlands and easier navigation from the Enrique Malek International Airport (DAV).
- For Quiet Exploration: Visit between May and October. While you will encounter rain, the city is less congested, and the natural scenery is at its peak vibrancy.
- Periods to Note: Late December and early January see a surge in domestic tourism, which can impact the availability of local transport and short-term rentals.
Packing and Preparation
Regardless of the season, David is hot and humid. However, your packing list should shift based on your itinerary:
- Dry Season: Pack lightweight, breathable cotton or linen clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Rainy Season: A sturdy umbrella and a waterproof jacket are essential. Waterproof footwear is recommended if you plan to leave the city center.
- Highland Excursions: If using David as a base to visit Boquete or Volcán, pack a light sweater or fleece, as temperatures drop significantly in the mountains regardless of the season in the city.
