Tomahawk Lagoon

Located at the western end of the Otago Peninsula, this forked lagoon is a natural area used primarily for nature walks and birdwatching. It provides a quiet environment for visitors to observe the local ecosystem away from the urban center of Dunedin.

Getting There

The lagoon is situated a short distance from the city centre. By car, the drive typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic. It is located near the village of Ocean Grove.

Most visitors spend between 1 and 2 hours here. This allows enough time to walk along the water's edge and explore the surrounding natural landscape at a slow pace.

When to Visit

The area is generally quiet and does not typically experience heavy crowds. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon often provides the best light for nature observation. All seasons are suitable for walking, though weather conditions on the peninsula can change quickly.
