Durban Botanic Gardens

Established as the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa, this facility consists of 15 hectares of subtropical gardens. Visitors go here to walk through diverse plant collections and observe local wildlife in a managed natural environment.

Getting There

The gardens are located within the city limits of Durban. From the city centre, you can reach the site via a short taxi or medium-distance ride-share or taxi, typically taking about 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the various themed sections and paths. This provides enough time for a leisurely pace without rushing through the subtropical landscapes.

When to Visit

Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat. The gardens are accessible year-round, though the subtropical climate ensures greenery in all seasons. Like most public parks, it can become crowded on weekends and public holidays.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, you can combine a visit here with other local landmarks. Nearby sites include:

  • Emmanuel Cathedral (1.5km)
  • Juma Mosque (1.5km)
  • KZNSA (1.8km)
  • The Cenotaph (2.2km)
