Seasonal Breakdown: Weather, Daylight, and Crowds

Edinburgh has a maritime climate with sudden weather changes and notable shifts in daylight. From Edinburgh Airport (EDI), the Edinburgh Tram and Airlink 100 bus connect directly to Princes Street in the city centre.

Spring (April to May)

Spring offers crisp air and daylight reaching 15 hours by May. Crowds along the Royal Mile and around the University of Edinburgh remain moderate, making this an ideal season for walking between the Old Town and New Town.

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings mild temperatures and up to 17.5 hours of light. August transforms Edinburgh with the Festival Fringe and International Festival. The Royal Mile and Cowgate fill with visitors, and lodging books out months ahead. June offers long days with fewer crowds.

Autumn (September to October)

Autumn brings brisk air and foliage across the Meadows and Holyrood Park. Visitor numbers drop once school terms begin in September, resulting in shorter queues at Edinburgh Castle and the National Museum of Scotland.

Winter (November to March)

Winter brings cold rain, high winds, and early sunsets before 4:00 PM in December. While Hogmanay draws crowds over New Year, January and February are the quietest months—unfavorable for hiking Arthur's Seat, but ideal for uncrowded museums.

Packing and Preparation

Edinburgh's hilly streets and coastal winds require sensible gear year-round:

  • Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes with reliable grip for wet cobblestone closes.
  • Outerwear: A hooded, windproof waterproof jacket. Umbrellas often invert in strong gusts.
  • Layers: Warm knitwear and thermal base layers, particularly from October through April.
