Alhamra Mosque

Overview

Alhamra Mosque is a Friday mosque situated on the main street of Fes el-Jdid, the historic royal city founded during the Marinid dynasty. It is known for its reddish exterior hue and traditional architecture. Non-Muslims are generally not permitted to enter active mosques in Morocco, so travellers visit to view the facade and minaret from the street.

Getting There

Located in Fes el-Jdid, the site is reachable from the modern city centre (Ville Nouvelle) by petit taxi in roughly 5 to 10 minutes, or on foot via the main thoroughfare.

Time to Allow

Plan for 15 to 30 minutes to view the building and its exterior details.

When to Visit

Daylight hours are best for viewing the architecture. Expect crowds and heavy foot traffic during daily prayer times, especially on Friday afternoons. Spring and autumn provide milder weather for walking through the district.
