How to navigate public and private transport in Freetown

Local Transport Modes

Freetown does not have a formalized mass transit system. Movement relies on a mix of shared and private vehicles:

• Kekehs (Auto-rickshaws): Best for short distances within neighborhoods and avoiding gridlock in narrow streets. They are the fastest option for quick hops.
• Shared Taxis: These operate on fixed routes. They are the most economical way to move across the city but can be crowded and follow rigid stops.
• Private Taxis/Ride-hailing: Ideal for those with luggage or those traveling to less frequent destinations. They offer door-to-door service and higher security.

Airport Transfers from Lungi (FNA)

Lungi International Airport is located on a peninsula across the water from the city center. Travelers must choose between two primary methods:

• Ferry and Taxi: The most common route. Passengers take a ferry from Lungi to the city waterfront and then a taxi to their final destination. This is generally faster than the road route.
• Road Transfer: A long drive via the ferry crossing or bridge. This involves significantly more time and effort due to road conditions and traffic.

Traffic and Timing

Rush hour is severe, particularly on the main roads leading into the city center and around the harbor area. Avoid scheduling tight connections during early morning and late afternoon peaks.

Luggage and Accessibility

Kekehs are unsuitable for large suitcases. For airport arrivals or moving between districts with luggage, a private taxi is the only viable option. Public transport accessibility for passengers with limited mobility is very low.

Service Hours

Most shared transport options operate from dawn until dusk. Late-night travel is limited and typically requires pre-arranged private transport.
