Tenjin

Tenjin

What Tenjin is

Tenjin is Fukuoka's main downtown district, packed with department stores, underground shopping arcades, and office towers. It functions as both the city's commercial core and its central business district, so it's where locals actually shop and work rather than a sightseeing set piece. Travellers come here for department store shopping, the underground mall network beneath the streets, and general city browsing rather than any single landmark.

Getting there

Tenjin is a few minutes from Hakata Station by Fukuoka City Subway, making it an easy stop whether you're staying near the station or arriving from Fukuoka Airport (FUK), which also connects to central Fukuoka by subway in well under 15 minutes.

How much time to allow

A couple of hours covers a walk through the main streets and one or two stores. If you plan to properly browse the department stores or the underground arcades, half a day is more realistic.

When to go

Weekends and evenings tend to be busiest, especially around the main intersections and station entrances. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer if you'd rather avoid crowds.
