About the Site

Menlo Castle is a 16th-century castle ruin located along the banks of the River Corrib near the village of Menlough. Travellers visit to see the ivy-covered stone exterior and walk along the peaceful riverside. As the interior is an unrestored ruin, visits are focused entirely on exploring the grounds and viewing the structure from outside.

Getting There

Located roughly 3 kilometres north of Galway city centre, the site is reachable in about 10 to 15 minutes by car or taxi. Walking from the city centre takes 45 to 60 minutes, while cycling takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Time to Spend

Allow 30 to 45 minutes. This provides enough time to walk around the exterior walls, view the riverside scenery, and take photos.

When to Visit

Visit during daylight hours, as the surrounding grounds and walking trails have no lighting. Dry days in spring and summer offer the easiest walking conditions, as paths can get muddy after rain. The area rarely gets crowded, though weekends bring occasional local walkers.
