Sayed al-Hashim Mosque
Overview
Sayed al-Hashim Mosque is an established place of worship located in Gaza's Old City. It is considered one of the largest and most historic religious sites in the area. Travelers visit primarily to observe its traditional architecture and its central dome, beneath which the tomb of Hashim, the great-grandfather of Muhammad, is said to lie.
Getting There
The building is situated in the Al-Daraj neighborhood. From Palestine Square in the city centre, the site is approximately a 5-minute walk north along local streets. Taxis from surrounding districts can also drop passengers off near the entrance.
Time to Allow
Plan to spend roughly 30 to 45 minutes to view the courtyard, dome, and prayer areas.
When to Visit
Mid-morning or early afternoon between daily prayer sessions offers the quietest conditions for a visit. The complex becomes crowded during regular prayer times and especially during Friday midday prayers; non-worshipping visitors should avoid these periods to keep from disrupting services. Modest clothing covering the shoulders and knees is required for entry.
