Overview

The Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970 stands at Solidarity Square near the Gdańsk Shipyard. Erected in 1980, the memorial features three anchor-shaped crosses. It honours the workers who died during the December 1970 uprising and is notable as the first monument in the communist bloc to publicly commemorate such victims.

Getting There

Located just north of the city centre, the square is roughly a 10-minute walk from Gdańsk Główny railway station. Walking from the Main Town takes around 20 minutes. Tram and bus lines also stop nearby at Plac Solidarności.

Plan for 15 to 30 minutes to view the crosses, read the commemorative plaques, and take in the scale of the plaza.

When to Visit

The memorial sits in an open-air public space. Daytime provides the best visibility for reading inscriptions and observing architectural details, while lighting illuminates the structure after dark. The square rarely becomes overcrowded, though tour groups frequently stop by during summer afternoons.
