Exploring Jerukak Island

Located off the eastern coast of Penang Island, this small island serves as a historical site. Travelers visit to explore its former roles as a quarantine station, a leprosarium, and a prison. The site provides a look into the island's administrative and medical history through its remaining structures and natural surroundings.

Getting There

To reach the island from George Town, travel to the Bayan Lepas area. From there, a ferry service operates to transport visitors across the water. The total travel time varies depending on traffic to the pier, but the ferry crossing itself is short.

Duration of Visit

A few hours are typically sufficient to walk through the site, view the historical remnants, and observe the coastal environment.

When to Visit

Visiting during the morning or late afternoon is advisable to avoid the midday heat. As it is a smaller, specialized site, it does not experience the same density of crowds as the central heritage zones of George Town.

Nearby Areas to Combine

Because the island is accessed via Bayan Lepas, it can be combined with visits to nearby locations on the mainland of Penang Island:

  • Batu Uban (3.3km)
  • Bayan Baru (3.6km)
  • Sungai Ara (5.3km)
  • Roman Catholic Diocese of Penang (8km)
