Grand Casemates Square
Grand Casemates Square
Grand Casemates Square is one of the two primary public squares in downtown Gibraltar's downtown area. It serves as a central pedestrian hub featuring a mix of cafes, restaurants, and shops. The northern side of the square is defined by a British army barracks building completed in 1817, which provides historical context to the site's military origins.
Getting There
The square is located within the city centre, making it accessible by foot from most downtown hotels and shops. Depending on your starting point in the central district, it typically takes less than 10 minutes to reach on foot.
Duration of Visit
Visitors generally spend between 30 minutes to two hours here, depending on whether they are simply passing through or stopping for a meal or drink.
When to Visit
The square is active throughout the year. It can become crowded during peak tourist seasons and during meal times when the outdoor seating areas are full. Visiting during the early morning offers a quieter experience before the midday crowds arrive.
Nearby Attractions
Because of its central location, the square is a convenient starting point for visiting other local sites. You can combine a visit here with the following nearby attractions:
- Moorish Castle: 0.3km
- Ocean Village: 0.3km
- John Mackintosh Square: 0.5km
- Roman Catholic Diocese of Gibraltar: 0.6km
