Mount Saint Catherine

Overview

Mount Saint Catherine is a weathered stratovolcano and the highest peak in Grenada. As the central landmark of the Mount Saint Catherine Forest Reserve, it features rugged volcanic topography and dense rainforest. Travellers visit to hike the mountain trails, observe native flora, and experience the interior highland terrain.

Getting There

From the centre of Gouyave, access roads lead inland toward the base of the reserve. The drive typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes by taxi or private vehicle, depending on road conditions and the specific trailhead used.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 4 to 6 hours for the round-trip ascent and descent. The steep grade and forest paths require a moderate to slow walking pace.

When to Visit

Set out in the early morning to avoid midday heat and reduced visibility from afternoon cloud cover. The dry season offers firmer footing, while the rainy season causes trails to become slick and muddy. Crowds are rare due to the demanding physical nature of the trek.

Nearby Attractions

The surrounding area includes several natural sites that can be combined into a day's itinerary:

  • Mount Nelson (1km)
  • River Saumache (1km)
  • Tufton Hall Waterfall (2.3km)
  • River Claire (3.6km)
