Murinsel
What It Is
Murinsel is an artificial floating island on the Mur River in Graz, designed to act as a pedestrian bridge connecting both banks. Created for the city's designation as European Capital of Culture in 2003, it features a curved, shell-like structure made of steel and glass. Visitors go to cross the river, view the flowing water from mid-stream, and observe modern architectural design integrated into the urban river landscape.
Getting There
The site is accessible on foot directly from the Graz city centre. Starting from Hauptplatz (the main square), head west along the streets leading toward the river. The walk takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Ramps on both the east and west riverbanks provide direct access onto the walkway.
How Much Time to Allow
Plan for 15 to 30 minutes. This is sufficient time to walk along the connecting ramps, cross the structure, view the river, and inspect the central platform area.
When to Visit
Visiting after sunset is popular due to the blue lighting that illuminates the structure at night. It sees steady pedestrian traffic during midday and on sunny weekends, though severe crowding is rare since visitors primarily pass through. In cold or windy weather, crossing can feel quite chilly due to wind coming off the water.
