What It Is

Nauthólsvík is a geothermal beach featuring a man-made lagoon where warm geothermal water mixes with the Atlantic Ocean. Travellers visit to swim in sheltered, tempered sea water and relax in outdoor hot tubs right along the coast.

Getting There

The site sits just south of central Reykjavík. Driving or taking a local bus from the city centre takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It can also be reached on foot or by bicycle along coastal paths in 30 to 40 minutes.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 2 hours to use the changing facilities, swim in the lagoon, and soak in the hot pools.

When to Visit

Summer provides milder air temperatures, though sunny days bring heavy local crowds. Winter appeals to cold-water dipping enthusiasts, but wind and freezing water require caution. Arrive earlier in the day to avoid peak afternoon crowds.
