West Lake

West Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Hanoi, featuring a shoreline of approximately 17 kilometers. The perimeter is lined with parks, hotels and villas, providing a space for walking or resting away from the denser urban areas of the city.

Getting There

The lake is located just outside the Old Quarter. From the city centre, you can reach the shores via taxi or ride-sharing app. The trip typically takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Depending on your activity, allow 2 to 4 hours. This provides enough time for a walk along a specific section of the shoreline or a visit to the lakeside cafes.

When to Visit

Early morning and late afternoon are the most suitable times to visit to avoid the midday heat. The area can become crowded with locals and tourists during weekends and public holidays. Visiting during the autumn months generally offers more moderate temperatures.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its size, it is practical to combine a visit to the lake with other nearby sites. Within a short distance, you can find:

  • Trấn Quốc Pagoda (1.9km)
  • Trúc Bạch Lake (2.1km)
  • Quán Thánh Temple (2.2km)
  • Presidential Palace of Vietnam (2.3km)
