Overview

The Almendares River is a 47-kilometer waterway flowing through western Cuba that supplies a major portion of Havana's drinking water. Travellers visit the green riverbanks to see a forested natural setting that contrasts with the dense surrounding city.

From central Havana, reaching the river takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes by taxi or private car, depending on traffic conditions.

Plan to allow 1 to 2 hours to walk along the shaded paths and explore the banks.

When to Visit

Morning and late afternoon are the best times to avoid midday heat. The dry season from November to April offers firmer walking surfaces, whereas the rainy summer months can make the ground muddy. The area is generally uncrowded on weekdays, while weekends draw more local residents.
