Overview

Morro Castle is a coastal fortress built by Spain to guard the entrance to Havana Harbor. Designed by an Italian engineer and once occupied by the British, the site offers historic fortifications, stone ramparts, and open views across the bay.

Getting There

The fortress is located across the bay from Old Havana. A taxi from the city center takes around 10 to 15 minutes via the harbor tunnel. Alternatively, local ferries cross to Casablanca, followed by a short taxi ride.

Recommended Time

Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours walking the ramparts and exploring the grounds.

When to Visit

Late afternoon is practical to avoid direct midday sun, as there is little shade on the stone pathways. The site gets crowded when tour groups arrive in the afternoon, though the open layout prevents excessive congestion.
