Vesikko

Overview

Vesikko is a preserved Finnish Navy submarine that saw action during the Winter War and Continuation War. Stationed in Helsinki, it functions as a museum ship where visitors can step inside to view the restored crew quarters, engines, and torpedo compartments.

Getting There

From Market Square in central Helsinki, take the ferry to Suomenlinna (roughly 15 minutes). From the ferry dock, it is a 10- to 15-minute walk south across the fortress islands to reach the site.

Time to Spend

Allow 30 to 45 minutes for a visit. The interior is compact and follows a single corridor through the vessel.

When to Visit

Because interior space is tight, the vessel can feel crowded quickly when several groups enter at once. Arrive in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours. Summer is the primary visiting season, as the unheated hull is subject to outdoor temperatures.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine your visit with other nearby sights:

  • Suomenlinna (0.3 km): Explore the historical island fortress grounds and fortifications.
  • Military Museum of Finland (0.4 km): Exhibitions on Finnish military and naval history.
  • Vallisaari (0.9 km): Neighbouring island with nature paths and former military structures.
  • Kaivopuisto (2.4 km): Mainland coastal park overlooking the Helsinki archipelago.
