Modes of Transport

Helsinki is a compact city where most visitors rely on the HSL network. The integrated system allows one ticket for all modes.

• Trams: The best for city center sightseeing and short hops between the Railway Station, Esplanadi, and the Market Square.
• Metro: The fastest way to travel east-west, specifically for reaching Itäkeskus or the west end.
• Commuter Trains: Essential for reaching the airport or neighboring cities like Espoo and Vantaa.
• Buses: Best for reaching outer districts or specific landmarks not served by rails.
• Ferries: The public ferry to Suomenlinna is the primary way to access the sea fortress.

Tickets and Passes

Tickets are purchased via the HSL app or ticket machines. The city is divided into zones (A, B, C, and D).

• Single Tickets: Suitable for those making very few trips.
• Day Tickets: Ideal for active tourists visiting multiple sites in one day.
• HSL App: The most efficient method for all travelers to avoid physical kiosks.

Note: These passes do not suit those who prefer walking or those staying exclusively in one small neighborhood.

Airport to City Center

Helsinki Airport (HEL) is located in zone C.

• Train (I and P lines): The most balanced option. It offers a direct route to the Central Railway Station with moderate cost and consistent timing.
• Bus: Available but generally slower than the train due to traffic.
• Taxi/Ride-share: Highest cost, lowest effort, and fastest for door-to-door delivery.

Practical Notes

• Rush Hours: Expect crowding on the metro and trains between 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:00.
• Last Services: Most lines run late, but frequency drops significantly after midnight. Check the HSL app for night schedules.
• Luggage: Trains and trams have designated areas for suitcases.
• Accessibility: Most trams and all metro stations are equipped with low-floor access or elevators.
