Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia
Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia
This Catholic basilica is the seat of the Diocese of Higüey and is dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic. Visitors go here to see the modern architectural design of the shrine and to observe its role as a center of national religious pilgrimage.
Getting There
The basilica is located on the outskirts of Higüey. From the city center, it is a short trip via taxi or local transport, typically taking about 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic.
Visit Duration
Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the main sanctuary and explore the surrounding grounds.
When to Visit
The site is generally quiet on weekdays, but it becomes very crowded during religious holidays and on weekends, as it is a major pilgrimage destination. To avoid the largest crowds, plan your visit for early morning or mid-week.
Planning Your Trip
Since the basilica is located in Higüey, it is often visited by travelers staying in the eastern region of the country. If you are arriving or departing via Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), you can coordinate a trip to the shrine, as the airport serves as the primary gateway to this area of the Dominican Republic.
