How to get around Honiara: Minibuses, taxis, and airport transit
August 29, 2026 · last updated · about 3 min read
Key Transport Modes
Honiara stretches along a single coastal corridor formed by Mendana Avenue and Kukum Highway. Two options handle most travel:
- Public minibuses: Vans run east-west between White River and Henderson. They are the cheapest, fastest option for daytime trips along the main road. Wave from the curb and pay the conductor.
- Taxis: Unmetered sedans win for traveling uphill, moving after dark, or hauling luggage. Always negotiate and agree on the fare before boarding.
- Walking: Practical only for short daytime errands in central Point Cruz. Heat, dust, and patchy footpaths make longer walks exhausting.
Tickets and Payment
There are no smart cards, passes, or digital bookings in Honiara. All transit is cash-only in local currency. Carry small notes and coins, as drivers rarely have change for large denominations.
Airport Transport from HIR
Honiara International Airport (HIR) sits ten kilometers east of the city along Kukum Highway:
- Taxis: Low effort, higher cost band. Readily available outside arrivals; the drive takes twenty to forty minutes. Agree on the fare before leaving.
- Pre-arranged transfers: Lowest effort, higher cost band. Arranged in advance through your accommodation for direct pickup.
- Minibuses: High effort, lowest cost band. Flagged on the highway outside the gate. They lack luggage storage; bulky bags require paying for an extra seat.
Practical Transit Notes
- Rush hours: Relying on one coastal road causes heavy traffic jams during morning and late-afternoon commutes, especially around Central Market.
- Last services: Minibuses drop off quickly after sunset. For evening travel, book a taxi through your lodging.
- Accessibility: City streets lack curb cuts and feature roadside ditches. Minibuses have steep steps and cannot accommodate wheelchairs.
