Rumeli Hisarı

This medieval Ottoman-era fortress is situated on a hill on the European side of the Bosphorus. Visitors go here to explore the military architecture of the 15th century and walk along the defensive walls that overlook the strait.

Getting There

From the city centre (Sultanahmet area), you can reach the fortress via a combination of tram and bus or by taking a taxi. The journey typically takes between 30 to 50 minutes depending on Istanbul's traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk the perimeter of the walls, explore the towers, and view the Bosphorus from the ramparts.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed, so spring and autumn offer the most moderate temperatures. It can get crowded during weekends and public holidays. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon helps avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds.
