Overview

Yedikule Fortress is a fortified complex built into Istanbul's ancient land walls. It incorporates the Byzantine Golden Gate and was expanded in the Ottoman period to serve as a garrison, treasury, and state prison. Travelers visit to examine the remaining stone towers, defensive ramparts, and tangible layers of the city's military history.

Getting There

From central Istanbul transit hubs such as Sirkeci or Yenikapı, take the Marmaray commuter rail to Kazlıçeşme or Yedikule station. The journey takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, followed by a short walk to the site.

Time to Allow

Set aside 1 to 1.5 hours. This provides sufficient time to walk the open courtyard, view the tower structures, and explore the perimeter.

When to Visit

Mid-morning or late afternoon is preferable during summer, as the outdoor grounds offer little shade. The complex generally does not draw large crowds, making it a manageable visit throughout the year.
