Herodium

Herodium is a fortress-palace complex built by Herod the Great in the 1st century BC. Located on a modified hill in the Judean Desert, the site consists of the ruins of the upper fortress and a lower palace. Visitors go here to see the architectural scale of the artificial mountain and the remaining structural ruins of the palace.

Getting There

The site is located approximately 12 km south of Jerusalem. It is accessible by car or organized tour from the city centre, with a travel time of roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours to explore the grounds, including the climb to the summit and the walk through the lower archaeological areas.

When to Visit

The site is located in a desert environment with little shade. Visiting during the cooler months of autumn and winter is advisable to avoid extreme heat. Early morning visits are recommended to avoid midday temperatures. The site can become crowded during peak tourist seasons and on weekends.
