Mount Herzl

Located on a hill 834 meters above sea level on the western edge of Jerusalem, this site serves as Israel's national cemetery. Visitors go here to see the resting place of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, as well as the graves of other key figures in Israeli history and national military cemeteries.

Getting There

The site is located outside the city center. You can reach it via local bus lines or by taxi. Depending on traffic conditions in Jerusalem, the journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes from the central areas.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the grounds, visit the primary monuments, and view the national cemetery sections.

When to Visit

The site is open outdoors, so visiting during the spring or autumn is advisable to avoid the extreme heat of summer. It can become crowded during national holidays and official state ceremonies.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its location on the western edge of the city, you can combine a visit here with other nearby sites:

  • Victims of Acts of Terror Memorial (0.3km)
  • Bible Lands Museum (2.1km)
  • Shrine of the Book (2.1km)
  • Israel Museum (2.2km)
