What It Is
MuseuMAfricA is a history museum in Johannesburg's Newtown precinct. It documents the heritage of southern Africa and the development of Johannesburg from a 19th-century gold-mining settlement into a major city. Travellers visit to study its collections of historical photographs, cultural artifacts, and exhibits on urban social history.
Getting There
Located just west of the central business district, the site is a 10 to 15-minute drive from the city centre. Ride-hailing services and taxis provide direct access to the entrance on the square.
Suggested Duration
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to view the permanent displays and temporary galleries at a steady pace.
When to Go
Weekday mornings and early afternoons offer a quiet visit. The galleries rarely get crowded, though school tours visit during term mornings. Because all exhibits are indoors, it is suitable year-round.
