Ponte City Apartments
Overview
Ponte City Apartments is a 55-story cylindrical residential skyscraper located near Hillbrow in Johannesburg. Completed in 1975, it was Africa's tallest residential building at the time. Travellers visit to examine its distinct architecture, hollow inner core, and the landmark neon sign at the top, which is the largest outdoor advertisement in the Southern Hemisphere.
Getting There
From central Johannesburg, the building is reachable by car, rideshare, or guided tour transport in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Due to neighborhood conditions, walking from the city centre is not recommended.
Time to Allow
Allow 1 to 2 hours for a visit. This duration allows enough time to view the internal hollow core from the bottom, visit the upper vantage points, and explore the immediate grounds.
When to Visit
Plan your visit during daylight hours, ideally mid-morning to early afternoon for the best natural light inside the central core. Avoid visiting independently after dark. The site rarely feels crowded, though guided group slots may require booking ahead.
