Wamala Tombs

The Wamala Tombs is a heritage site located on the outskirts of Kampala. It serves as the burial place of Ssekabaka Suuna II, the 29th king of the Buganda Kingdom. Visitors go here to learn about the history of the Buganda Kingdom and view a site recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance.

Getting There

The site is located outside the main city center of Kampala. The most common way to reach the tombs is by hiring a taxi or using a ride-sharing app. Travel time varies depending on traffic conditions, which can be heavy in the city, but generally takes between 30 to 60 minutes from the central business district.

Visit Duration

Most visitors spend approximately 1 to 2 hours at the site. This allows enough time to walk through the grounds and receive an explanation of the site's historical context from a local guide.

When to Visit

It is advisable to visit during the morning or early afternoon to avoid the heavier rains common in the region. The site does not typically experience the same level of crowding as the more central landmarks in Kampala, though it may be busier during local cultural events.

Nearby Attractions

The site can be combined with other points of interest in the region:

  • Lwajjali River: 2.2km
  • Kasubi Tombs: 7.6km
  • Mother Temple of Africa: 7.6km
  • Makerere: 8km
