Primary Modes of Transport

Kampala's geography and traffic patterns make the choice of vehicle critical for timing.

• Boda Bodas (Motorcycle Taxis): The fastest way to navigate the city, especially during peak congestion. They win for short distances and narrow streets, though they require a helmet and a level of comfort with weaving through traffic.
• Matatus (Commuter Minibuses): The backbone of public transit. These follow set routes between hubs like the Old Taxi Park and various districts. They are the most cost-effective option for longer cross-city trips.
• Ride-Hailing Apps: Preferred for safety, fixed pricing, and luggage. These win for nighttime travel or when moving between distant districts with heavy bags.

Airport Transfers from Entebbe (EBB)

Entebbe International Airport is located approximately 40 kilometers from the city center.

• Private Transfers/Ride-Hailing: Lowest effort and highest cost. These provide door-to-door service and are the most reliable for those arriving late at night.
• Shared Shuttles: Moderate cost and effort. These are often coordinated via travel agencies or local operators.
• Public Taxis: Lowest cost but highest effort. Passengers typically take a vehicle to the Entebbe town center before transferring to a matatu heading to Kampala.

While boda bodas operate nearly 24/7, matatu frequency drops significantly after dark. For safety and reliability, scheduled private transport is recommended for late-night movement.
