Seasonal Weather in Kano

Kano has three distinct climate phases: a cool, dry spell from November to February, intense heat from March to May, and rains from June to September. Arriving via Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (KAN), visitors will find that road conditions and transit comfort vary dramatically by season.

November to February: Cool Dry Season (Best Time to Visit)

This is the most comfortable period for sightseeing. Days are warm and dry, while nights turn brisk. The trade-off is the Harmattan—a Saharan dust wind that lowers visibility and can disrupt flight schedules at KAN. Even so, this is the prime window to explore the Old City and Kurmi Market by keke napep (tricycle).

March to May: Severe Heat

Temperatures routinely pass 40°C during these pre-monsoon months. The dry heat makes outdoor walking exhausting. If traveling now, restrict sightseeing to early mornings and book air-conditioned vehicles rather than open tricycles.

June to September: The Rainy Season

Rain peaks in July and August with sudden, heavy storms that flood unpaved streets in historic quarters. While the surrounding savanna turns green, humidity and muddy lanes make urban travel challenging.

Cultural Events and Availability

The city peaks in activity during the Kano Durbar, held at Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Hundreds of mounted horsemen gather at the Emir's Palace (Gidan Rumfa). Inbound flights to KAN fill up early, and roads in the Old City close to vehicles.

What to Pack

  • Harmattan season: A jacket for cool evenings, lip balm, moisturizer, and a dust scarf or mask.
  • Year-round: Modest, lightweight cotton clothing honoring northern Nigerian customs, durable walking shoes, and sunglasses.
