Indra Chowk
What It Is
Indra Chowk is a historic public square and active market crossroads in central Kathmandu. Travelers visit to observe daily local street life, view open-air merchant stalls selling fabrics and household items, and see traditional Newar architecture alongside small street-side shrines.
Getting There
The square is situated in the older central part of the city. From central hubs like Thamel, it takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes on foot heading south through the market alleys. Taxis or rickshaws drop passengers along the perimeter roads, followed by a short 5-minute walk into the intersection.
Time to Spend
Plan to spend between 30 and 45 minutes exploring the crossroads, viewing the architecture, and browsing the adjacent market lanes.
When to Visit
Early morning is the best time for a calmer experience while vendors set up their goods. The square becomes heavily crowded and noisy in the late afternoon and evening as local foot and motorbike traffic peaks. The dry season from autumn through spring offers the easiest walking conditions.
