Swayambhunath

Swayambhunath is a Buddhist stupa complex located on a hill west of Kathmandu. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its religious significance and architecture. Visitors go here to observe the stupa, the surrounding shrines, and the large population of monkeys that inhabit the area, which has led to its common nickname, the "Monkey Temple."

Getting There

The site is located a few kilometers from the city center. Most travelers reach the hill via taxi or ride-sharing services from central Kathmandu. The journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to climb the stairs, walk around the stupa, and explore the various shrines and viewpoints overlooking the valley.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds. The site can become very crowded during religious festivals and public holidays. The best seasons to visit are spring and autumn when the weather is mild and visibility of the city is clearer.
