Silesian Planetarium

Silesian Planetarium

Located on the border between Katowice and Chorzów, this facility is the oldest and largest planetarium in Poland. Visitors go here to watch astronomical projections and educational shows about the universe. It serves as a scientific center where the focus is on observing the stars and learning about space through simulated night skies.

Getting There

The planetarium is situated within the expansive Silesian Park. From Katowice city centre, you can reach the site via local public transport (trams or buses) or by taxi. The journey typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes depending on the mode of transport and traffic conditions.

Time Requirement

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours for a visit. This includes the duration of a scheduled planetarium show and time to explore the immediate facility.

When to Visit

The experience is indoors, making it a viable option regardless of the season. It is advisable to check the show schedule in advance to avoid waiting. Like most popular educational sites, it can get crowded during weekends and school holiday periods.

Nearby Attractions

Because the planetarium is integrated into a larger recreational area, it is easy to combine the visit with other nearby sites:

  • Silesian Park (0km): The facility is located directly within this park, allowing for a walk immediately after the show.
  • Silesian Zoological Garden (1km): A short walk through the park leads to the zoo.
  • Bytkow TV Tower (1.1km): A nearby landmark offering a different perspective of the region.
  • Japanese Garden in the Silesian Park (1.1km): A landscaped garden located within the same park complex.
