The Best Time of Year to Visit Keren, Eritrea

Seasonal Weather and Conditions in Keren
Situated in a valley basin at roughly 1,390 meters, Keren sits lower than Asmara and feels noticeably warmer throughout the year.
October to March (Dry and Mild): This is the ideal window for travel. Daytime temperatures are comfortably warm and skies are clear, while evenings bring a cool breeze without high-plateau frost. It is prime weather for walking between the central market, Italian-era buildings, and the British and Italian war cemeteries.
April to May (Hot Season): Midday heat intensifies sharply before the rains. Late May hosts the annual Mariam Dearit pilgrimage at the sacred baobab tree shrine, drawing travelers from across Eritrea and straining regional bus transit.
June to September (Rainy Season): Afternoon storms mark the Kremti rains. The surrounding granite hills turn green, but unpaved ground becomes muddy and rain can slow travel along the winding highway from Asmara.
Best Timing for Sightseeing
Visit between November and February for mild temperatures and dry roads. Time your visit to include a Monday, when pastoralists and traders meet for the weekly camel and livestock market in the dry riverbed.
Permits, Transport, and Packing
- Travel permits: Foreign travelers must obtain an official travel permit from the Ministry of Tourism in Asmara before departing. Road checkpoints will inspect this document.
- Transport: Buses and shared minibuses depart from Asmara's western station, descending through Elabered.
- Packing: Pack light, breathable fabrics, sun protection, sturdy walking shoes, and a light jacket for evenings. Conservative dress covering shoulders and knees is standard in both Christian and Muslim neighborhoods.
