Gunt River

The Gunt River is a river in southern Tajikistan that originates from Lake Yashilkul on a plateau over 3,700 meters above sea level. Travelers visit this location primarily to observe the confluence where the Gunt meets the Panj River in Khorog, where the merging of the two water bodies creates a distinct visual contrast in the landscape.

Getting There

The point where the river meets the Panj is located within the Khorog area. Depending on your starting point in the city center, it is a short trip accessible by local taxi or a walk, typically taking between 10 to 20 minutes.

Duration of Visit

A visit to the confluence typically requires 1 to 2 hours. This allows enough time to walk along the banks and observe the river flow and the surrounding valley scenery.

When to Visit

The river is accessible year-round, though water levels and colors vary by season due to glacial melt. Visiting during the day provides the best visibility of the river's meeting point. This location does not typically experience heavy crowds.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a visit to the river with other local sites in the region:

  • Tajik–Afghan bridge at Tem-Demogan: Located 4.5km away.
  • Shakhdara: Located 6.4km away.
