Overview

Established in 1765, this site is considered the oldest botanic garden in the Western Hemisphere. Located just outside central Kingstown, it holds a diverse collection of tropical flora, mature trees, and historical grounds. Travellers visit to study Caribbean plant species and walk along quiet, shaded pathways.

Getting There

The grounds sit about 1.5 kilometres north of downtown Kingstown. Reaching the entrance by taxi or local minibus takes 5 to 10 minutes. Walking from the town centre takes roughly 20 minutes uphill.

Set aside 1 to 2 hours on site. This provides sufficient time to walk the main paved paths and view the plant collections at a moderate pace.

When to Go

Mornings and late afternoons offer the most comfortable temperatures and avoid peak midday heat. The area is generally uncrowded, though foot traffic increases when cruise ships dock in the harbour.
