Indian Museum
Overview
Opened in 1814, the Indian Museum is one of India's oldest museums. It holds a broad collection of artifacts, sculptures, and historical relics gathered from across the country. Visitors go to view regional artwork, archaeological finds, and exhibits covering ancient and medieval Indian history.
Getting There
Located in central Kolkata, the site is accessible from the city centre via the metro, public bus, or taxi. Reaching the venue from central hubs typically takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. The nearest metro stations are Park Street and Esplanade, both within walking distance.
Recommended Duration
Plan to spend roughly 2 to 3 hours to cover the primary galleries. Those wishing to inspect specific collections in depth may want to allow half a day.
When to Visit
The cooler months from November to February provide the most comfortable weather for travelling around Kolkata. The galleries can get crowded on weekends and public holidays, so arriving earlier in the day is recommended to avoid peak foot traffic.
